The goal of WG3 is to translate the findings of DFM into recommendations to strengthen the dried fish sector. Foundationally, WG3 aims to highlight the multiple ways in which dried fish are valuable to counter negative perceptions of dried fish or to simply raise the profile of a product class that is often overlooked, taken for granted, or neglected. Beyond just drawing attention to the values of dried fish, however, WG3 also aims to provide research-based advice to support policy, governance, and development in practical terms.
Working Group 3 separates policy, governance, and development as three distinct but closely related areas for applied work. We see policy as the legal and other guidelines that inform the conduct of dried fish production, exchange, and consumption. Governance describes the interactive practices that inform or guide the conduct of dried fish social economies. For DFM, development is the critical assessment of deliberate efforts to improve aspects of dried fish social economies.
Almost all DFM outputs make explicit connections to policy, governance, and development. The final period of DFM includes several final research projects that focus explicitly on applied research within the ambit of WG3.
