Help:Importing text with Zotero citations from a word processor

From DFM Wiki

Normally, it is possible to copy and paste text from a word processor into the visual editor without losing much formatting.

If the source document contains Zotero citations, these will need to be converted to a format that can be recognized by the wiki.

Conversion process

  1. In the word processor (Word, LibreOffice, or Google Docs), select the Zotero “Document Preferences” menu then “Switch to a Different Word Processor”. All the citations in your document will be converted to links with visible codes. (It is usually a good idea to save a new copy of your document first, just in case anything goes wrong.)
  2. Go to https://driedfishmatters.org/cgi-bin/zotero2wiki.py. Copy and paste the content of the converted document text into the box on the screen, then press the “Submit” button.
    • Edits you make to the text after pasting it into the box will NOT be saved or processed. Only the pasted text will be processed.
    • If you are working with a large document, you can work section-by-section: it is not necessary to copy and paste the entire document at one time.
  3. From the results page, copy and paste the text you need into the edit box in the wiki page. Normally, if your pasted text includes Zotero templates and the like, it should automatically be recognized as “wikitext” code and you will see an alert box with the message "Converting wikitext".
    • If you don’t have any citations or other formatting in the first few lines of the pasted text, the wiki will not recognize that there are citations to be formatted. If you still see templates like {{Zotero|…}}, you should undo the change (CTRL+Z), select “Source Editing” under the pencil menu at the top right, and paste the text again. Now you can go back to “Visual Editing” and you should see the citations.

Images and advanced formatting

This tool will handle basic inline formatting (bold and italic text), as well as paragraphs, headings, and basic tables (including horizontally merged cells).

Images are NOT implemented because they need to be uploaded separately to the wiki, although you can copy and paste new images individually into the wiki visual editor using the Insert > Images and media > Upload menu, or upload them in bulk (Special:UploadWizard) then insert individually into the wiki page. Other complex formatting is NOT preserved, including footnotes, cross-references, and named styles.
