Help:Image uploader
The Upload Wizard is the default method for uploading images and other files to the DFM Wiki, for use within the Dried Fish Matters project and beyond. This tool replicates the one used by Wikimedia Commons. The text and screenshots below describe the typical uploading process.
You can access the uploader at any time by following the "Upload file" link in the "Wiki tools" site menu.
Step one: Learn
A licensing tutorial is displayed. This infographic outlines basic copyright rules concerning which images can be uploaded to this wiki. Original works (uploaded by the author) are always allowed, while works created or inspired by others can be uploaded on some conditions. You can opt to skip the tutorial on subsequent uploads.
Step two: Upload
You can select one or multiple files (up to 50 files at the time) and begin uploading. It is possible to upload files simply by dragging and dropping them from your computer's file browser onto the blue button that says "Select media files to share".
Step three: Release rights
You have to clarify the licensing status of the file or files.
Works created with DFM funding are subject to SSHRC policies, including the principle that "research data collected with the use of public funds belong, to the fullest extent possible, in the public domain and available for reuse by others" [1]. As such, by default any files uploaded to the DFM wiki are released under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license, meaning that others can freely reuse and adapt the images you upload, provided they give credit to the author and share any derivative versions using the same license terms.
The default upload for files that are your own work looks like the following:
If the work you are uploading was created by someone else, you must identify the source and author(s). You must also indicate why it is permitted to use the work, using one of the following options:
- the copyright holder published work with a Creative Commons license
- the copyright has expired in Canada (the author died more than 50 years ago)
- the work was produced by the United States Federal Government
As a last resort, you can use the "I'm not sure" option at the bottom.
Step four: Describe
You are required to add basic descriptive information for each file. It is possible to set some of this information in bulk, by assigning the same description or categories (subject tags) to all the files at once.
Step five: Use
If the files are uploaded successfully, the results are summarized in the final step to make it easy to copy and paste file information for the intended use.
