By default, pages on the DFM wiki are "unlisted". Anyone who has the link to a page can see that page, but search engines are instructed not to index the wiki, so page contents should not show up in online search results. These settings ensure that the DFM wiki is semi-private, but do NOT ensure that information stored here is secure.

Individual wiki pages can be exported to a public-facing, read-only part of the website by tagging them for inclusion in the "Public" category on the wiki. Pages on the public website will be exposed to web crawlers and will be included in search indexes.

The exported version of each page will have similar formatting to the wiki page, but will not contain any menus or navigation links. Additionally, links to other wiki pages or image description pages will be disabled.

Using this process, you can keep information about your research team up-to-date.

Instructions

To publish individual pages on the wiki:

  • From the visual editor, click on the hamburger menu (three horizontal lines) at the top of the editor interface.
  • Select the "Categories" option.
  • Type "Public" in the search box and select the matching option when it pops up, then click the "Apply changes" button.
  • Save the page.

The page should now be listed at Category:Public.

Pages in this category are periodically exported to the public-facing website (driedfishmatters.org). You can also trigger regeneration of the public pages by manually clicking the "Publish" button on the category listing.

Additional information

Once a page has been published, changes to that page will be included in future updates to the published pages. If the page is deleted on the wiki, or if the "Public" category tag is removed, the page will be removed from the public pages.

The published files are listed in the basic index in the "/pub" directory of the website, but are also linked from various menus on the website. For example, the research team and DFM student pages are linked from the menu at the top of our public website.
