|A written report will be produced, with summary tables, figures and charts. The report will serve as a basis for a journal publication. The Department of Fisheries (DoF) has rich data sets about fisheries and fish products, which will be analyzed to provide an overview of the types, volume and value of dried fish products, nationally and by province. The review will include inland and freshwater capture fisheries, as well major aquaculture fisheries that supply raw materials to the dried fish products. This will be supplemented by import and export data of key commercial dried fish products. Time series analysis will also be conducted on these data sets to look at patterns and changes that may have taken place in the last 10 years. - Collaborating Investigator: Dr. Suvaluck Satumanatpman (Mahidol University)
- Terms of Reference: DFM_TOR_TBTI_Scoping-TFA_2020-02-19_EXECUTED
- Dates amended below 2021-03-15
Status
- Recently hired two part-time RAs to help conduct interviews at wholesale/retail markets in Bangkok and the vicinity. They should be completing their study in April.
- March 2021: planning to travel to the coastal provinces to complete the scoping study, assuming the Covid-19 situation is under control. The recent outbreak in the fresh fish market at the end of last year put a halt to the research plan, but the team hopes to be able to travel starting in early March to mid-April. The field research will be done by a part-time PDF, accompanied by Ratana, as well as Suvaluck, Kungwan and Thammasak, when time permits.
- May 2021: the team are planning to organize a workshop with the Dept. of Fisheries (DoF) and key DFM stakeholders to discuss the results of the scoping study, and also to identify further questions for the next steps.
- Kungwan has been closely involved in the discussion about the new Fisheries Act and its effect on small-scale fisheries. Ratana mentioned briefly at the last WG1 meeting about the issue surrounding anchovy fisheries, which was the original topic that DoF was interested in, although now they need to add a new angle on how the new regulation affects the fresh fish supply for the dried fish processing. Nova is going to take on this topic in her MA research, which will include two parts: the global overview of anchovy fishery, focusing on the stock, food security and nutrition, values to SSF, and governance, and climate change. She will then conduct a case study in Thailand, at the end of this year.

Deliverable | Report on literature review | A written report will be produced, with summary tables, figures and charts. In addition to DoF data, the overview report will also include review of literature. | 2021-05-15 | Few Thai publications discovered by the team. Available literature was used in guiding the scoping research. NOVA is working on this. | Check with @NOVA.
This report can focus on analysis of secondary data, not just publications specifically related to dried fish. It will be useful to have market data, etc., in a distinct report prior to the final Scoping report. |
Deliverable | Results of literature review on Zotero online reference database | Gray literature references and other references identified during literature review uploaded to Zotero with meta data | 2021-05-15 | 17 items in Zotero database as of 2021-03-01, but not local literature. | Include links to online datasets, etc. that are relevant to dried fish? |
Deliverable | Report on rapid appraisal of dried fish value chains | A "rapid appraisal" approach will be taken for this stage of the research in order to get the sense of the scope and the extent of production, processing, trading (wholesale and retail markets) of all dried fish products, based on their volume and value according to the output from the first component. Visits to major supermarkets in the BMA will also be conducted using a "check-list" approach to document the types, varieties, and prices of dried fish products available to consumers in BMA, which include Thai people from across the country and foreign workers. These activities will help provide additional contexts, supplementing the information from Component 1. Further, it will help determine how best to conduct the scoping studies in the next phase. Informal interviews with key stakeholders will also be conducted, which will help fine-tune the questionnaire that will be used for the scoping studies.
The report will comprise of:
|
2021-06-30 | Agreed to combine into the Scoping report, with reflection on the contribution of “pre-Scoping” exploratory research to the data process.
SUGGESTION: Provide some figures and tables prior to the final report, to assist comparative study. Specifically: list of fish species, table of imported/exported products, geographic data (for mapping in late 2021). |
